Hrishikesh Mukherjee – the pioneer of Indian dramas who bought a new wave of filmmaking with his out of the box style of direction that involved satire, humour and a vital social message that was loved and lauded by the layman.
The man who made everyone laugh their hearts out with ‘Golmaal’ and made us weep with ‘Anand’ was a human genre in himself. His films had a human touch which made his films so legendary.
His films laid the foundation for the modern cinema and his larger than life persona still lingers in the air, here are some of the lesser known facts about our beloved Hrishi Da:-
1). The character of Anand in his best movie ‘Anand’ starring Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan was in fact inspired from his relationship with Raj Kapoor. When Raj Kapoor fell ill, he got worried that he might lose him and this is when he etched the heart-wrenching tale of Anand.
2). The ever-dedicated man directed his films ‘Anupama’ and ‘Asli Naqli’ whilst he was wheel-chair ridden as he faced a severe arthritis attack.
3). The man was not just a visionary filmmaker but a good teacher as well, he taught maths and science for a while. He was also a graduate in chemistry.
4). Hrishi Da was a legendary filmmaker who made epic films but he never won a single Filmfare for ‘Best Director’.
5). Hrishikesh Mukherjee worked with Bimal Roy as an assistant director in classic Indian films like Do Bigha Zameen and Devdas.
