One of the 1st significant festivals that fall in the new year is Makar Sankranti. It is celebrated on 14th of January. Makar means Capricorn and Sankranti is a transition. The festival marks the end of winter season and the beginning of the spring season.
Makar Sankranti In Different States
In Haryana festival is called"Sidha" where Churma of ghee, halwa and kheer are cooked especially on this day. Also on this day, the brother of every married woman visits her home and presents some warm clothing for her and her husband's family.
2.Gujarat and Maharastra
In states like Gujarat and Maharastra, the kids are seen flying kites and kites flying is the significant cultural practice observed on this day.
The day marks the beginning of Pongal in Southern India which lasts for 3 days.
The first day of the festival is connected with the rain god and boiled rice and milk is offered to God. On the second day, it is offered to the Sun God and on the third day, the family cattle are given a bath and dressed with flowers, bells and colours.
In Uttar Pradesh, it is called kichri and it is important to have a bath in the Sangamon on this auspicious day.
In Punjab, Bathing in a river in the early hours Is important. The festival of Lohri is called Makar Sankranti where people celebrate the festival by lighting the bonfire and putting sugarcane, sweets and rice in the bonfire.
However, one thing that is static about this festival is that it is celebrated on every 14th of January.
