India staged yet another impressive show with bat and bowl at Wellington to defeat New Zeland 4-1 in the recently concluded ODI series in New Zealand. While the host were already recovering from a humiliating series defeat, looks like there is more for the Blackcaps to worry about. In a major blow, the right-handed New Zealand opener Martin Guptill has been reported unfit for the 3 match T20 series against India, starting from 6th February; and would likely watch the play from the stands.
New Zealand coach Gary Stead informed the that Guptill has failed to recover from an injury that he sustained before the 5th ODI between the two sides. Meanwhile, Gary made sure that Guptill will return to the side when the team will take on Bangladesh in an ODI series scheduled to begin from 13th February.
As of now, it is the all-rounder Jimmy Neesham, who will replace the injured Guptill in the T20 series. Neesham was out of action for nearly 18 months before he made a comeback against Sri Lanka in January 2019. And now he once again has a chance to impress and emerge as a reliable option for the world cup.
The T20 series between India and New Zealand will commence on February 6 at Wellington and following to Auckland on Feb 8 and Hamilton on Feb 10; thus ending the tour.
After the New Zealand series end, India will play a home series against Australia before the 2019 world cup. Australia and India will play two T20 and 5 ODIs against each other.
