Nambi Narayanan is a man who is often regarded as the synonym of ‘genius’ but as the word goes that geniuses never lead a simple life, and Narayan was no exception.
The man who just got facilitated with ‘Padma Bhushan’ is a well-known face in the science and tech zone for developing Vikas Engine which was used for the first PSLV launched by India. His discovery led to the success of many crucial missions like Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan.
India was once only capable of controlling solid fuels and for the advanced technologies; we were always dependent on foreign countries. It was this time when Nambi thought to change the course of action with the discovery of liquid propulsion technology. The man went to Princeton University and studied everything about rocket propulsion and then he spent the next few years in mastering his skills.
Everything was going really good for Nambi until 1994 when he was falsely accused of selling classified defence secrets to two Maldivian intelligence officers: Mariam Rasheeda and Fauzia Hassan. He had to fight a long battle and finally in 1996, his charges were lifted after a CBI inquiry but it was too late, by then as Nambi’s image was stained badly and he faced a lot of humiliation and his own countrymen saw him as a traitor.
Recalling the hard times, Nambi said: "People would come to our house and burn my effigy, call me names, shout slogans... My family suffered a lot. My children were agitated and would fight back. But my wife slipped into depression and stopped talking."
He did not lose hope and fought for 24 years and finally in 2018 Supreme Court cleared all the charges and also ordered Kerela government to compensate the man with INR 50 lacs. And, this year the man has been graced with the ‘Padma Bhushan’ award; truly, great men never lose!
