The actors turning into politicians have certainly the greater stake to manipulate the political landscape and gain a foothold in politics with their popularity. That is the reason why they are being favored in politics. Quite recently there has been news about entering of stars like Gautam Gambhir, Urmila Matondkar.
However, celebrities entering politics is not something new or unique. There have been quite a few popular faces which have entered into the foray of politics. Only a few of them have passed with flying marks others have not even managed to pass on the borderline.
So let’s have a look at the political career of these actor-turned politicians:
1. Amitabh Bachchan
The Shahenshah of Bollywood never had much interest in politics. He entered the political landscape with the support of his longtime family friend Rajiv Gandhi in 1984. He had a very short political span of 3 years as he resigned in the year 1987. In his short political journey, he also supported the Samajwadi Party to support his friend old friend, Amar Singh.
2. Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar entered in the politics when the president of India offered him the offer of Rajya Sabha member under Prominent Citizens Quota. He took oath on 4th June 2012. Although Sachin Tendulkar have the poor record of attendance in the Parliament he is successfully involved in projects like ‘reconstruction of a bridge in Chamoli district which was destroyed during a cloud burst, a new building for a special needs school for deaf and mute children in Ahmednagar’s Sangamner taluka and a hostel for underprivileged school children in West Medinipur.’
3. Smriti Irani
Television actor turned politician Smriti Iran is few of those celebrities who have a quite successful political journey. She has handled various portfolios including Ministry of Textiles, Information & Broadcasting, Human and resource portfolio.
4. Shatrughan Sinha
He entered politics at L.K. Advani’s behest who was his friend, philosopher, guru, and ultimate leader. After holding two-term as BJP Lok Sabha member from Patna Sahib Singh there has been speculation that he may join Congress.
5. Kirron Kher
She started her political career in 2009 and has been very vocal in supporting Narendra Modi and BJP. Kher goes the credit for increasing the upper age limit for entry into government service in UT from 18-25 to 18-37 years, doubling old age and disabled pension, enhancing wages to Home Guards, and construction of five new sports complexes.
