Yesterday, PM of the country announced about the successful testing of anti-satellite missile weapon against the low-earth orbit satellite in the space. This is probably India’s first anti-satellite mission launched successfully. While the entire nation came to know about the successful launching yesterday there exists a lack of clarification and understanding about the same. So here I am to explain everything to you in simple words.


What is a satellite?


A satellite is an object in the space which revolves around the bigger object in the space. For example, the moon is a natural satellite which revolves the planet earth. Like earth, every planet has its own natural satellite. Apart from the natural satellites, there are artificial or man-made satellites which are launched in space. There is a separate mission/ purpose for the launch of such satellites.

What is an anti-satellite weapon?

An anti-satellite weapon is used to destroy the satellite in space. They are used for military purposes.

What is an orbit?


Orbit is basically a path one object in space takes around the other. Planets, comets, asteroids and other objects in the solar system orbit the sun.

What is a low- earth orbit?


Low- earth orbit is the first 100 to 200 miles (161 to 322 km) of space. It is said that one orbit/ rotation in the orbit takes 90 minutes and also the international space station is in Low Earth orbit.

What is DRDO?


Defense research and development organization is an agency of the Government of India, charged with the military's research and development.

Why is this mission important?

Anti-satellite weapons will help to protect our own satellites strengthening our safety.
