After their appearance in 2016 final, Bangalore finished at the bottom of the table in 2017, failed to make it to the playoffs again in 2018 and are yet to register a win in 2019. Now, this is a line-up that features two of cricket's greatest batsmen in Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers and yet they have managed to register the longest losing streak at the start of the season. Is it the bowlers? The fielding? Wrong tactical moves?
The four wickets loss against Delhi on Sunday meant that Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore equaled the longest losing streak at the start of the season in IPL. Strangely enough, this record was helped by Delhi Daredevils from their 2013 campaign. Languishing at the bottom of the table - RCB is still technically not out of the reckoning for a playoff spot, but they are in desperate need to solve some problem.
FINDING THE RIGHT XI
Six matches and four different starting XIs for RCB, four different bowling attacks, three different opening combinations, a different top five every game. Virat Kohli is yet to settle his playing XI and define roles for each player.
Virat Kohli, the batsman has delivered in the IPL, but the captain has been found wanting. Kohli picked just two spinners on a turning track in Chenna and handed a 16-year old legspinner a tough test against Hyderabad. Moeen Ali didn’t bowl against KKR…and Pawan Negi wasn’t brought on to bowl to Russell, who is supposedly weak against spin.RCB's bowling attack has looked clueless on the field and the captain has himself acknowledged the problem.
CATCHES WIN MATCHES
Virat Kohli's Bangalore has dropped 14 catches this season. This is the most by a team in the table and a 58% conversation rate shows, they have not taken their chances. The problems are plenty and obvious, but the solutions are nowhere in sight. A week's rest could do well for Kohli and Bangalore as they re-group to get their campaign on track against Punjab on Saturday.
