Most of the experts think that if someone is a great batsman or a bowler, they would be a great captain for the team. Well, that is obviously not the correct way to select the captain of a team. One has to see a lot of other aspects as well, as the characteristics of a captain are a lot more than just being good at batting or bowling. While there have been successful captains like Sourav Ganguly, M S Dhoni, Ricky Ponting, and Graeme Smith who performed great as a batsman also during their captaincy, but then there are some of the greatest players who captained and failed. And it was not just the failure of captaincy, but while they were captaining they performed really bad.

So the captaincy did not only effect the team, but also the performance of the batsman or the bowler who we depended upon. The reason is obvious, their minds were more on the performance of the team rather than their own performance. And that’s the right thing to do for a captain, but not every player is capable of handling such situation and some of the big players who failed in it are Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Heath Streak, Andrew Flintoff and Chris Gayle. All of them captained their respective teams, and failed the team as well diminished their own performance during the captaincy years. There are also a few examples going on right now, like Virat Kohli, he is one of the greatest batsmen but when it comes to captaincy he is not as good as needed.

He was emerging as one of the greatest players, and that is what made the selectors make him the captain of the team but he has been seen struggling and has been in a lot of stress after that. Even in the Indian Premier League, we can see that the whole RCB team is performing bad and Kohli is single-handedly taking the team to the most he can. But after a time, it diminishes the performance of the player because of the pressure and that is why selecting a captain on the basis of their batting or bowling capability is wrong. The good players need to focus more on their game, rather than the performance of the whole team. Give the captaincy to someone who can handle both of the things, and that is when the performance of the whole team would get better.
