It is the unsung story of a lady about which most of us don’t know. I am talking about Dr. Bharti Yadav who becomes the first female MBBS doctor from Indore. The lady is no more with us, unfortunate we lost her on the 14th of August 2017. But instead of remembering her in with heart filled with sorrow, I think we remember and talk about her with so much proud and happy. Because her whole life she lived only for her patients.

Let’s start her story from the very start:

She was born on 3 April 1926 in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. The city knows for Kumbh Mela and for its beautiful pilgrimage sites. She hailed from a renowned Maharashtrian family. In 1937 when girls’ education considered as a waste of money and time and was discouraged the most, she expressed her desire for higher studies. Her father had been the pillar of her career, he admitted her in a nearby village school till the seventh standard. Then her father makes her joined a boarding school in Indore- Ahilya Ashram School, the only girls’ school in Indore in those times.

After getting higher grades in her eleventh class, she got the admission in Holkar Science College in 1948, Indore for her BSc studies. She was the topper in her first year.

She studied her MBBS from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College when she got the admission based on her good performance in eleventh grade. Among 40 MBBS students, she was the only girl student.

And after completing her graduation she becomes the first doctor from central India. She rejected job offers from the government to work in Nandalal Bhandari Maternity Home to treat the wives of the poor mill workers. Instead, she decided to open a nursing home in her residence with her husband Late Dr. CS Yadav- Vatsalya Nursing Home. There she has done over 1.5 lakhs deliveries including 70,000 normal deliveries. She almost treated thousands of women without taking a single rupee fee from them.

And this is the story of the great Padma Shri awarded Gynaecologist Dr. Bharti Yadav.
