There are times when the players get injured while playing the game, and they get retired hurt for it. But then there are some of the players who even while being injured have played for their team and have showed that they care for the team more than themselves. The latest incident is of Shane Watson who hit a massive 80 off 59 balls in the finals of the 12th season of IPL. He had almost taken Chennai to the victory gate, but got run out with 4 runs needed for the team to score. What no one knew was that he was bleeding with his knee injured from a dive in the third over of the game, and he still played till the last over with his bloodied knee. None of us had noticed until Harbhajan Singh posted a status picture of him where he can be seen with the bloodied knee while batting, and wrote "Can you guys see the blood on his knee.. He got 6 stitches after the game..Got injured while diving but continue to bat without telling anyone. That’s our Shane Watson. Almost pulled it for us last night."
Previously, we have seen other cricketers as well who instead of getting retired hurt and relax continue playing for their teams. In the year, 2009 in a match between Australia and South Africa Mitchell Johnson b roke the left hand of Graeme Smith and it was a serious injury. To achieve the target of 376, the batsman came out to play in pain fought for 17 balls but then got out. In 2003, in a match between South Africa and Pakistan, a bouncer of Shoaib Akhtar broke the nose of Gary Kirsten according to the X-ray reports but with his barely recognizable face he scored 46 and the heroic act is still in talks.
Another incident is of the year 2002, when Marvin Dillon broke Anil Kumble’s jaw with his ball but he continued batting after spatting out the blood. Later, it was found out that the jaw was fractured and needed a surgery but didn’t leave. The bowler came with a bandage around his face, and neck and bowled 14 overs. With 5 maiden overs, and a wicket of Brian Lara they managed to draw the test match. Then there is the story of Malcolm Marshall who is considered one of the best bowlers of an era, his thumb was broken into two pieces and he came to bat as the last man just to get Gomes his century as he was 4 runs short. Then there is Bert Sutcliffe, Wahab Riaz, and more who have played for their country even with the pain and that is how we know how much they care for the team.
