According to reports, a spyware-infected worlds most popular messaging application Whatsapp. The NSO’s product Pegasus is a program that can snoop into the user’s phone. According to the report they did this via a government level tool as they usually give it to a government.
By taking advantage of Whatsapp’s security vulnerability, they could infect the target user’s smartphone through spyware. This requires only one voice call. While taking advantage of the shortcomings of Whatsapp, spyware could be installed in that mobile by a voice calling on a target number.
The most serious issue here is that taking advantage of this loophole the hacker can take control of the target’s smartphone. And, the target need not do anything in the smartphone. By doing so, the hacker might access all sensitive data in the smartphone, including chats, calls, microphones, cameras, photos, and contacts.
WhatsApp itself has admitted that because of this loophole they can inject the spyware in the phone through just a missed call. But, they also admitted that they have now fixed this loophole. And, they remove this malware.
According to Whatsapp, the company found this spyware in early May. And, an “advanced Cyber actor crafted Spyware”. They are responsible for this spyware. The company said that they cannot provide the exact numbers of phone affected by spyware.
WhatsApp in a statement said, “This attack has all the hallmarks of a private company known to work with governments to deliver spyware that reportedly takes over the functions of mobile phone operating systems.”
While the company also released a statement urging the users to update their application. It said, “The Facebook-owned WhatsApp encourages people to upgrade to the latest version of our app, and keep their mobile operating system up to date, to protect against potential targeted exploits designed to compromise information stored on mobile devices,” WhatsApp said to encourage its users to update the app.
