Quite often most of the things that we consume on a daily basis are purchased without really knowing about it and its effects on our health. The choices we make to buy these things of necessity are not made deliberately. There exist a lot of myths surrounding it and we tend to believe it. One of such necessity is sugar. While there have been claims about brown sugar being healthy than the white sugar. Is there really any difference between both? Let’s find out.

The study says that the only difference between both the sugars is in taste and colour. While brown sugar is made from the same process as the white sugar they are less processed thus contains slightly more minerals. However, when it comes to benefits both are similar calorie wise.

According to Clinical Nutritionist Dr Rupali Datta, "Both white sugar and brown sugar are similar, nutritionally and also calorie-wise. The only difference lies in the flavour, colour and the process these both go through." Basically, brown sugar is white sugar with molasses and is considered as raw sugar majorly because it goes through lesser chemical processing as compared to white sugar.

Brown sugar is thus nothing but white sugar mixed with molasses (Molasses is the thick, brown syrup left after the sugar has been removed from the juice.) While it may contain some of the more nutrients like calcium, magnesium and B-vitamins but molasses is a form of sugar only and contains the same amount of calories.

A teaspoon of packed brown sugar provides 17 calories and 1 teaspoon of white sugar contains 16 calories, says the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Nutrient Database.

Thus, it is pretty much clear that there is no difference in both the sugars when it comes to calories. Thus if you are consuming it as a healthy option then you are mistaken.
