Karan Johar film Kalan featured such a great cast with so many big names, Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, and Alia Bhatt acted in the lead roles. This multi-starrer film couldn’t do anything well on the screen. Even though it could not be matched with the fans’ expectations.

The film only made Rs 95 crore at the domestic market. During a recent interview, Madhuri was asked about her film, and about its failure on the box office. She said, "I have been in the industry for more than three decades. Ups and downs are a part and parcel of our work. So, it doesn't bother me much when a film doesn't work."

She added, "Everybody gave their best. No one goes to the sets to do a half-hearted job. But in the end, certain things aren't in our control. We have to move on. The film was received well overseas."

The movie produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Production, the movie was based on the partition drama and a love story. Madhuri played the role of Bahaar Begum. Initially, Sridevi was chosen first for the role, but after the unfortunate death of the actress, Madhuri was cast.

In her earlier interview, Madhuri said that she was so emotionally attached to Sridevi and her sudden death and Madhuri getting her role, made difficult to play the role for Madhuri.

"As an actor, it wasn't difficult to play this role. But emotionally it was difficult as you know something unfortunate had happened so suddenly. I am also a mother, she [Sridevi] has two kids, who are so young, so thinking of all that, it was really sad," said Madhuri Dixit.
