Cricket to India was introduced by British soldiers and sailors and it was in 1721 when the first match of cricket was played in Surat, in India. Parsis, who are known to be the first to take the interest in the sport established Oriental Cricket club in 1846 and also the club known as the Parsi Cricket Club. This is the same club which sent the team for the first official tournament.

So it was on 25th June 1932 when team India, ‘All India’, as it was called because it sent players from all parts of the country played its first official test match against England . The match was played at Lord Cricket ground in London. It is said the captain of the team who was the richest patron and the Maharaja of Patiala actually stepped down two weeks before the tournament because of the health reasons.

The new choice for the captaincy was on the shoulders of Maharaja of Porbandar, who found himself incompetent with the experience and lack of leadership skills and he handed over the responsibility to Cottari Kanakaiya Nayudu, who was Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1933.

The raw side of Indian side was seen in the first few hours of the match and eventually India lost the match by 158 runs. However, everything was not disappointed for the team as the players were successful in making an impression to the world. Interestingly the team won the world cup same day 51 years later in 1983.
