"Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it."-- Henry David Thoreau

It is hard to define success, for some success is having a six-digit salary in their bank accounts, for some reaching the top of the ladder is a success. Others define success as having a secure and comfortable job. While the varied definition of success remains constant, the meaning of success has been altered in the changing times.

Here is why the meaning and significance of success changed:

1. Contrary to the earlier times when people not only worked for one single organization in their entire life but also dreamt of retiring from the same organization employees in the present times no longer wish to stay in the same organization for a lifetime. They plan their career moves to keep in mind their growth.

• Why has a drastic change in mind-set noticed in the younger generation?
With the declining state of the economy, there has been a gradual fall in jobs in the market and as a result, even big companies are cutting down their employees. Thus it is evident that jobs are no longer secure in today’s time. With little job security employees thus focus on their career.

2. There has been a drastic change in the attitude of employees. While earlier employees wished to have face to face time with the top level, the present times have been different as they prefer to have a flexible work environment and avail benefits like ‘Work from home’.

Thus, the younger generation prefers to have flexible control over their careers. What drive their career are the opportunities to learn and grow rather than the pay check.

What does success mean to you? Has the meaning of success altered?
