It has been a long time since Deepika Padukone was seen on silver screen. She was last seen in the most controversial movie Padmaavat after which the actress has not been a part of any movie. Rumours going round suggested that since Deepika is busy with the preparation of her wedding, she is not committing her time to any big project right now.
But the actress has been finally signed by the director of Raazi, Meghna Gulzar who is akng a movie on an acid survivor Laxmi Agarwal. A leading daily has confirmed Deepika indeed is playing the character of survivor Laxmi Agarwal in this movie. The story of Laxmi has touched her so much that she is not only playing the lead but also producing the movie.
“When I heard this story, I was deeply moved as it’s not just one of violence but of strength and courage, hope and victory. It made such an impact on me, that personally and creatively, I needed to go beyond and so the decision to turn producer,” Deepika told a leading daily.
Taran Adarsh took to Twitter and made it official. Taran, a film critic, and an analyst wrote, "IT'S OFFICIAL... After #Padmaavat, Deepika Padukone teams up with #Raazi director Meghna Gulzar... Deepika will portray the part of an acid attack survivor in the film."
Meghna feels that the society needs to hear Laxmi’s story. She said, “Using Laxmi’s story as a lens, we are attempting to explore these aspects and the consequences of acid-related violence in our society. This’s what makes this must-told story relevant. Awareness is the first step towards change.”
Choosing Deepika to play the character of Laxmi, Meghna said,
“I was instinctively convinced that Deepika would do justice to the character and the story. Also, her physicality matched with what I’d imagined for Laxmi’s character. I’m grateful and encouraged that she was so spontaneous in her decision to do the film.”
